Cairns Base Hospital - Block E

Joint Venture Consultancy with Daryl Jackson Architecture and McConnel Smith Johnson.

Block E comprises an eight storey building accommodating a new Cancer Care Centre to the lower two levels and a new car park to the upper levels. This project represents Stage 1 of the hospital redevelopment program, allowing the existing car park to be demolished, freeing up space adjacent the existing hospital for the new Acute Care Services block.

Block E is a dominant structure with a form of singular volume and mass, articulated by circulation cores. Layering of sun screening panels with bright yellow powder coated steel blades break the monotony of the large fa├žade. Louvre assemblies are angled in opposite directions to alternate floors, animating the expression. A split level butterfly roof, with the deep, serrated profile of Aramax roofing gives a defining silhouette to the building.
