Mossman Gorge Centre

Fisher Buttrose worked with the indigenous community, the Kuku Yalanji people, and local, State and Federal Governments on the Mossman Gorge Visitor Centre which incorporates all natural elements of Mossman Gorge. The centre, contains cultural and ecological interpretation, café, gallery and retail space, and training centre and accommodation with purpose built parking for 250 cars and 17 tour buses daily.

The design responds to the natural landscape of rainforest flora and fauna which are core to the Kuku Yalanji people. A seed and pod features in the Breeze Way and Art Gallery / Gift Shop, sculpted in timber, it symbolizes the core and opportunity for growth. Features of the centre celebrate the natural wonders of the rainforest with rainwater cascading from the roof into a sparkling spoon drain, leaf cutouts in the ceiling dapple natural light into timber deck breeze way, 17000 plants cultivated for the landscape, and a colour scheme inspired by the surrounds.
